Anne VanBeber, PhD, RD, a nutritional sciences professor at Texas Christian University, puts it plainly. ‘Blueberries have long been associated with supporting health and protecting against disease,’ she says. ‘Specifically, blueberries have been shown to protect against cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, promote brain health and cognition, promote gut health, and aid in exercise recovery.’

Improved vessel function matters for blood pressure and circulation; lower fasting insulin is relevant to metabolic health and diabetes risk.
That combination of findings across 83 trials gives the blueberry’s reputation considerably more structural support than a single study would provide.
Recovery, exercise, and the inflammation angle
For anyone who trains regularly, the anti-inflammatory picture is worth considering. Hard exercise triggers a natural inflammatory response in muscles, and blueberries’ anthocyanin content may ease that process. ‘Because blueberry intake is associated with reduced inflammation, they may have a positive effect for athletes in recovery after exercise,’ VanBeber says.
That is not a replacement for sleep, hydration, or a properly structured training programme. But as an everyday food that also happens to carry this property, it is a relatively painless addition to a recovery routine.
Fresh, frozen, or wild: what the numbers suggest
Fresh blueberries are good. Frozen blueberries are also good, and they cost less, last longer, and work well in anything cooked or blended. The more counterintuitive point concerns wild blueberries specifically. Wild blueberries are smaller than cultivated varieties and contain more anthocyanins per serving. A frozen bag of wild blueberries from the back of the supermarket freezer may carry more nutritional value than fresh cultivated berries on the shelf at the front. That is not the obvious conclusion, but it is what the comparative figures suggest.
In terms of preparation, blueberries ask almost nothing. They pair well with yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, and chia pudding. They can go into salads, be blended into a vinaigrette, or stirred into a sauce. Washing takes thirty seconds; thawing frozen berries takes a few minutes.
Most food-based health habits require you to change what you eat. This one mostly asks you to add something. The research on anthocyanins, from single-nutrient studies to large multi-trial reviews, is now substantial enough that the addition is worth making deliberately rather than occasionally.
