Ethiopian Farmers Solar Irrigation Switch Cuts Fuel Bills by £5,800 a Year

Ethiopian farmers solar irrigation technology is delivering concrete results in Central Ethiopia and around Addis Ababa, where solar-powered water pumps funded through Farm Africa and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency are replacing diesel and petrol pumps that were costly to run and difficult to fuel.

The switch is part of Farm Africa’s Nature-based Solutions for Sustainable and Inclusive Development programme. Ethiopia’s vast irrigable land and abundant water resources have long sat underused by smallholder farmers, most of whom still depend on rainfall. That dependence leaves them exposed to drought and increasingly erratic weather. For those who did have irrigation, rising fuel prices and supply disruptions have cut into profits and slowed production.

What the Akaki Kality Cooperative Has Gained from Solar Irrigation

The clearest example of Ethiopian farmers solar irrigation gains so far comes from a 25-member vegetable-growing cooperative in Akaki Kality. The group had been irrigating 1.5 hectares of land using diesel-powered pumps, burning through 2,300 litres of fuel during a single three-month growing cycle, according to Farm Africa. The financial drain was predictable and recurring.

Since switching to solar, the cooperative is on track to save £5,800 a year in fuel costs alone, Farm Africa reports. Those savings go directly back into the cooperative rather than to fuel suppliers, and members are no longer exposed to the price volatility that comes with diesel dependence.

The scale of the logistical burden that diesel created is worth spelling out. For farmers in the rural Oromia Region, sourcing fuel was not simply expensive, it required lengthy journeys and administrative approvals before a purchase could even be made. Time spent queuing and travelling was time not spent farming.

‘Farmers have had to wait in queues for hours to purchase fuel, costing precious time that should be spent farming. The impact on productivity has been severe,’ the programme notes.

Beyond Cost Savings: Drought Resilience and Lower Emissions

The financial case for Ethiopian farmers solar irrigation is the most immediate, but the wider benefits matter too. Reliable solar-powered water supply means farmers can keep irrigating through extended dry spells rather than watching crops fail when rainfall doesn’t arrive. That shift from weather-dependent to weather-resilient farming is what makes the programme substantively different from a simple equipment upgrade.

On the environmental side, eliminating diesel from irrigation removes a direct source of greenhouse gas emissions from smallholder farming operations. Ethiopia is a country described as having ‘thirteen months of sunshine’, and solar irrigation makes use of that resource without the supply-chain fragility that comes with imported fossil fuels.

It is not a frictionless transition. Upfront costs for solar pump systems remain a barrier for many small farmers who lack access to credit, and the programme’s reach is currently concentrated in specific areas around Central Ethiopia and Addis Ababa. Scaling the model across a country of Ethiopia’s size, with its varied terrain and uneven rural infrastructure, is a different challenge from the initial pilots.

Farm Africa Programme Manager Ayele Feleke framed the opportunity plainly: ‘Solar irrigation is a clean energy source that can deliver a powerful double dividend: lower costs for farmers and a healthier planet for future generations.’

The programme is funded jointly by Farm Africa and Sida. With fuel price shocks continuing to disrupt agricultural production across the region, the case for rolling out solar irrigation more broadly is built on numbers the Akaki Kality cooperative is already generating: 2,300 fewer litres of diesel burned every three months, and £5,800 back in farmers’ pockets each year.
