The OnlyMarms marmot conservation funding effort has raised approximately $6,000 in tips and attracted around 1,700 followers since launching on OnlyFans, a response by Colorado researchers to federal funding cuts that left a six-decade field study scrambling for income.
The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory has spent 65 years studying yellow-bellied marmots in Colorado. When that work suddenly needed new revenue, UCLA professor Daniel Blumstein, co-director of The Marmot Project at the laboratory, landed on an unlikely solution. ‘Marmots have money troubles, and I figured why not launch an OnlyFans site?’ he told TODAY, making a playful reference to the TV series Margo’s Got Money Troubles. A student’s immediate response, ‘OnlyMarms!’, sealed the name.
The OnlyFans page is free to follow and accepts voluntary tips. Its content is firmly G-rated: early videos include a female marmot rebuffing the advances of a male at her burrow, and the platform’s current stars are two marmots named Jamba Juice and Egg, whose clips have accumulated a following drawn more by wholesome charm than anything the platform is usually associated with.
Why OnlyMarms Marmot Conservation Funding Became Necessary
The funding shortfall has a specific origin. According to the Daily Bruin, an NSF programme panel decided the laboratory had already collected enough long-term data to answer its research questions, effectively ending that funding stream. The decision left a project with deep roots suddenly exposed.
Those roots go back to 1962, when Ken Armitage began the marmot study at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. More than six decades of continuous field observation represents a scientific resource that is genuinely difficult to replicate, which makes the funding gap all the more costly to the wider research community.
Blumstein has been direct about what is at stake. ‘Understanding the world around us is something where there might not be a direct profit,’ he told the Daily Bruin. ‘But we need to understand the world around us. We need to understand the role of species in their communities.’
The $6,000 raised so far comes with a catch: the Daily Bruin reports that OnlyFans takes a 20% cut of tips, meaning the net return to the laboratory is lower than the headline figure. It is a real constraint, and one the team is working around by diversifying its income streams rather than relying on any single channel.
Fat Marmot Week and a Fundraising Beer
The OnlyMarms push is one part of a broader creative fundraising effort. The laboratory is running its first-ever Fat Marmot Week, a public vote on which marmots are gaining the most hibernation weight. Round 1 voting closes 24 August, following a format similar to the National Park Service’s Fat Bear Week.
Marmot popularity on social media has provided some wind behind the effort. One TikTok video, in which a marmot receives a bath while a handler draws washboard abs on its belly using what appears to be shaving cream, has passed three million likes on its own. That kind of organic reach is precisely what makes the OnlyMarms marmot conservation funding strategy credible beyond a novelty headline.
Supporters have also created a meme coin cryptocurrency called OnlyMarms, which has reportedly earned thousands of dollars in fees for the laboratory. A local brewery has joined in with a limited-edition fundraising beer called Marmot Tears. None of these were part of any conventional research funding model, but together they represent a working, if unconventional, response to a real financial gap.
The laboratory accepts tips via OnlyMarms and also welcomes suggestions from followers about other creative ways to fund the research. With Round 1 of Fat Marmot Week closing on 24 August, the competition gives supporters another concrete moment to engage with the project and keep the income flowing.
