Students are taking advantage of one of the new features of the iPhone to copy notes in class.

This has been shown by a video that has gone viral on TikTok , the favorite platform of the youngest; the video, of just a few seconds, tells it all: how it is possible to use the iPhone to spy on the notes of other students and obtain them without having to write anything.

The ‘trick’ is based on one of the novelties of iOS 15 , released last September. It’s called ‘Live Text’, and it uses machine learning to recognize written text anywhere. As the video shows, you just have to open the iPhone camera, take a photo and click on the button in the lower right corner; the iPhone will automatically detect the text and we can select it and copy it to a file or a note.

In fact, you don’t even need to take the photo; The iPhone is capable of detecting if we are focusing on text , and it will offer us the possibility of selecting it directly without having to take the photo.

When Apple introduced this functionality at WWDC 2021, it did so proudly, demonstrating how it is possible to use it to translate text in languages we do not speak, for example; the machine learning system is capable of recognizing a wide variety of typefaces, even written ones.

Apple probably did not expect this novelty to become popular as it is ideal for cheating and stealing notes in class. The original video, recorded in a class in France, has gone viral, with more than 90,000 “likes” or “I like”, and on Twitter a copy of the video published by @ juanbuis has obtained more than 13,800 retweets and 2.4 million views.

At the moment, there seems to be no way to avoid such acts, especially among college students who often use laptops and other note-taking devices. Apple has made no representations about the use of this technology for these purposes.
