New York City‘s AI ban for students covers every child from pre-K through eighth grade (more than 500,000 pupils) making it the broadest moratorium any school district in the United States has issued on generative AI. The ban applies to the 2026-2027 school year and targets student-facing AI software and companion chatbots. Teachers are not covered by the restriction, and high school students are exempt, though they will receive AI literacy classes twice a year.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani framed the decision as a rejection of a particular industry narrative. ‘The tech industry wants us to believe that AI-powered early education is not only inevitable, but necessary,’ he said. ‘We do not see it that way.’ Schools chancellor Kamar Samuels put the case in developmental terms: the ban is about protecting the capacity for critical thinking that students lose when they outsource work before they have built the ability to do it themselves.

The restriction arrives at a moment when AI tools have been moving into classrooms at pace. The argument for intervention at the younger grades rests on a straightforward concern: children who rely on AI to complete tasks before they have practised those tasks independently may never fully develop the underlying skills. New York City Public Schools is the largest school district in the country, which means the policy carries weight beyond its own boundaries. Other districts will be watching whether the moratorium holds and what, if anything, it changes in student outcomes.
The dual-track approach (a hard ban for younger pupils, paired with structured AI literacy for older ones) reflects the difficulty of the problem. Banning the technology entirely for older students would leave them underprepared for workplaces where AI is already standard. But introducing it too early, before foundational reasoning skills are in place, may carry its own costs. The week’s other solutions, from cancer diagnostics to offshore reefs
The AI ruling was one of eight solutions covered in the week’s roundup. On the health front, an at-home urine test called Galeas, developed at the University of Birmingham with Cancer Research UK funding and licensed to diagnostics company Nonacus, was trialled by the NHS across nearly 1,000 patients at seven hospitals in England and Scotland. It detected bladder cancer in 92% of cases, and when the result came back negative, there was better than a 99% chance the patient was genuinely in the clear. The results were published in the European Urology Oncology journal. The test scans urine for cancer DNA, checking more than 450 mutations across 23 genes linked to bladder cancer.
Michelle Mitchell of Cancer Research UK said: ‘Too many people are waiting longer than they should for a bladder cancer diagnosis, and it’s essential that we find ways to tackle this problem.’
A separate development addressed degenerative blindness. Researchers at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, working across a programme more than ten years in development, restored vision in blind animal models using light-activated compounds called prosthe6, delivered as eye drops. No surgery, no gene therapy, no implant. The target conditions (age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa) affect roughly 200 million people worldwide and carry an estimated annual cost of $400 billion. The next step is human clinical trials.
Also presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich was an AI tool developed at Imperial College London with British Heart Foundation funding. Running on a standard electrocardiogram (a test taken by about a billion people each year) the model caught heart failure in up to 81% of cases and heart valve disease in up to 90%, working in under two seconds. The trial covered 67,000 US patients. Separately, the four largest cardiovascular health organisations agreed on a universal heart attack definition for the first time, with two specific changes that address conditions up to ten times more common in women.
On the environmental side, data from Taiwan’s Formosa Wind Farm, which has been running since 2017 on 69 turbines in sandy, reef-free water, found 86 reef-associated fish species clustering within 50 metres of turbine foundations, while the surrounding sandy areas held none. The 54 steel cylinders driven into the sea floor off Long Island for Empire Wind 1’s 810-megawatt installation may produce a similar effect. Whether the foundations are generating new marine life or concentrating existing populations is a question researcher Emmanuel Oyewole at the University of Rhode Island is currently working to answer.
