A Patek Philippe Calatrava auction result of £59,000 has stunned a Cornish family after the 1930s stainless steel wristwatch was pulled from a jewellery box during a house clearance in Camborne, Cornwall, according to InStoreMAG. The pre-sale estimate had been £5,000.
The watch, a Patek Philippe & Co Calatrava Reference 448, had passed quietly through generations of the same family. The seller’s grandfather originally owned it, and it is believed his wife bought it as a gift for him, given her known love of designer clothes and luxury items. It then passed to their daughter, who told her own children she had an expensive watch somewhere in the house. No one anticipated quite how expensive.
What Made the Patek Philippe Calatrava Auction Result So Dramatic
Darren Ashley, senior valuer at Hansons Auctioneers, examined the piece when it was brought in. ‘When I finally had the watch in my hands and was able to examine it properly, I knew we had something extremely rare,’ he said. Ashley explained that Patek Philippe produced very few stainless steel watches during the period, and that scarcity makes surviving examples extraordinarily desirable to collectors, alongside what he called its ‘mechanical perfection’.
The watch’s condition added to its appeal. ‘This was a watch dating back around 90 years, which had spent decades within the same Cornish family and, when it was placed in my hands, it was still finely ticking away,’ Ashley said.
According to National Jeweler, the watch carries serial number 822731 and case number 610667. The dial is inscribed ‘Patek Philippe & Co Geneva’ and features a subsidiary seconds dial, details that allow specialists to authenticate and precisely identify a piece. For collectors and dealers, that level of documentation matters: provenance is part of what drives bidding beyond estimate.
Bidders From Five Countries Competed at the Penzance Sale
The public auction took place in Penzance on a Tuesday. Pre-sale interest had arrived from serious collectors around the world, and the room reflected that. InStoreMAG reports that bidders from the US, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and the UK all competed for the piece. The final contest came down to Japan and China.
‘The pre-sale interest was phenomenal, from serious collectors across the world, but nothing quite prepares you for watching that level of bidding unfold in the room,’ Ashley said. ‘The final battle between (bidders in) Japan and China was incredibly exciting. To see the hammer finally fall at £59,000 was a fantastic moment for the family.’
Three members of the family were present in the room. Others followed the bidding live from work, on laptops and phones. ‘They were absolutely thrilled,’ Ashley said, ‘while other members of their family were following the auction live from work on their laptops and phones and couldn’t believe what they were seeing.’
The result, at nearly 12 times the original estimate, is the kind of outcome that makes house clearances worth taking seriously. The difficulty, of course, is that most families have no way of knowing what they are looking at without specialist input, and items like this can easily be missed, sold cheaply in a car boot sale, or simply discarded.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, was direct about the lesson. ‘Never overlook what is tucked away at home,’ he said. ‘This little watch had passed quietly through generations of a Cornish family, its late owner knowing she had something valuable, but perhaps never imagining quite how sought-after it would become. When rarity, quality and provenance come together, the results can be spectacular.’
The Patek Philippe Calatrava auction result has concluded its Cornish chapter. The watch will now begin a new chapter in Hong Kong, thousands of miles from the jewellery box where it spent its final decades in storage.
