Niger’s Niger FMNR land restoration effort has returned 5 million hectares of degraded Sahel land to productive use, regenerated more than 200 million trees, and benefited roughly 2.5 million people, all without planting a single seedling. How Niger FMNR land restoration works
The story begins in 1983, when Australian agriculture advisor Tony Rinaudo was working in Niger and noticed something unexpected: land that looked completely dead still held living root systems beneath the soil. Those roots were waiting, not for planting, but for overgrazing to stop long enough to let them grow.
From that observation, Rinaudo developed a technique called Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR). Farmers protect and selectively prune shoots emerging from existing underground root systems. No seedlings, no nurseries, no large-scale planting operations. The method works because it aligns with farmers’ own interests: trees they protect deliver shade, erosion control, firewood, fruit, and animal fodder in return.
According to RNZ News, the area using Rinaudo’s technique grew by 250,000 hectares a year over 20 years, reaching the current 5 million hectares with 200 million trees regenerated. Niger formally recognised FMNR as a national restoration method in 2020. The scale achieved is made more remarkable by how little it cost compared with conventional reforestation programmes, which depend on seedling production and replanting at every stage.
The obstacles are real, of course. Sustaining farmer buy-in across decades requires that the economic returns remain visible and reliable. Overgrazing pressure does not disappear on its own. And scaling the model to other Sahel countries involves navigating land tenure systems, local governance structures, and funding cycles that are rarely straightforward. What Niger demonstrates, though, is that where conditions align, the land’s own biology can do much of the heavy lifting.

The penguin story is, in the podcast’s own words, “absolutely adorable”, but it carries serious conservation weight. Researchers on Phillip Island in Victoria are running the world’s first wild bird vaccination programme, catching, microchipping, and vaccinating more than 1,000 little penguins against H5N1 bird flu, with a target of 5,000 birds across Phillip Island and St Kilda Colony. A two-dose schedule is only possible because the birds return to the same burrows every night. The Phillip Island population of roughly 40,000 birds draws 700,000 visitors a year and contributes about $500 million to Victoria’s economy; without intervention, up to 16,000 could be lost to H5N1.
In France, unsolicited telemarketing calls became outright illegal this week, not restricted, not regulated, but banned. A 2025 parliamentary report found 97% of French people are annoyed by cold calls. Businesses must now obtain written consent before calling anyone for marketing purposes and keep proof of that consent on file. The move is part of a broader European shift from opt-out to opt-in models, alongside GDPR and cookie-consent rules.
In London, a Lancet Public Health study of more than 3,400 children found direct evidence that the city’s ultra-low emission zone improved children’s lung growth, not just slowed damage. Children in central London grew lung function at 233 millilitres per year after the zone was introduced, compared with 223 millilitres per year in Luton, the control area. It is the first study to link a clean air zone specifically to faster lung growth in children.
Baltimore is rethinking what the city sends to its nearly 1.7 million annual 911 calls. Mobile crisis teams, pairing a clinician with a peer counsellor, already respond to mental health calls in place of police. A new programme backed by $400 million in opioid legal settlement money will expand that approach to cover housing, healthcare, and education services for drug-related harms.
On the renewable energy front, the world reached 3 terawatts of solar capacity faster than forecasters expected: the first terawatt took 68 years, the second arrived in two years, the third in 19 months. As of April 2026, solar and wind together produce more electricity worldwide than natural gas. Chinese manufacturers drove down panel costs, enabling adoption in Pakistan, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Cuba.
