More than 3,000 mountain yellow-legged frog reintroduction releases this year have placed endangered frogs and tadpoles back into the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains, with Bluff Lake in the Big Bear area among the sites where animals entered the water for the first time in living memory. The effort is part of a decades-long programme run by San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, which has now returned over 10,000 of the animals to high-elevation habitats since the work began.
Returning to Waters Empty for Generations
The scale of absence these frogs are filling is difficult to overstate. According to The Wildlands Conservancy, the mountain yellow-legged frog had been missing from Bluff Lake for more than 70 years before this year’s releases. Elsewhere in the range, the gaps are similarly stark: at Hall Canyon on the University of California’s James San Jacinto Mountains Reserve, the frogs had been locally extinct for more than 40 years before the programme reached them.
Those absences reflect a species-wide collapse. The mountain yellow-legged frog was once historically abundant across California’s high-elevation lakes and streams. It has since declined by more than 98%, pushed towards extinction by a combination of chytrid fungal disease, introduced predators, wildfire, and drought. None of those pressures has gone away, which is what makes the current reintroduction effort both necessary and genuinely hard to sustain.
Conservationists watched this year’s cohort leave their small carrying crates and take their first hops into the wild at Bluff Lake, disappearing into the water. For the teams who have spent years breeding these animals, the moment is the point of the whole enterprise. But it is also the beginning of a new set of unknowns: whether the frogs will survive, reproduce, and establish self-sustaining populations is something that only years of follow-up monitoring will determine.
Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog Reintroduction Built on 15 Years of Breeding
The animals released this year were bred at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s Beckman Centre for Conservation Research. According to Mongabay, the reintroduction programme began in 2010, building on conservation work the Alliance and its partners had been conducting since 2006. Those partners include the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US Geological Survey, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
What started as a rescue response has expanded into a structured 20-year conservation breeding and reintroduction programme. The programme now encompasses breeding for genetic diversity, disease management, reproductive research, and systematic reintroduction across multiple mountain sites. Conservation teams continue to monitor reintroduced frogs to track their health, survival, and long-term success in native habitats.
The disease dimension is particularly complex. Chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, has driven amphibian declines globally and remains a constant threat to newly released animals. Disease management is built into the programme rather than treated as a separate problem, a design choice that reflects hard lessons learned in amphibian conservation worldwide.
Introduced predators, particularly non-native trout stocked in mountain lakes decades ago, continue to pose a risk in some locations. Removing or excluding predators from reintroduction sites has been part of the preparation work, though not every site can be managed in the same way.
Drought and wildfire add further uncertainty. California’s mountain ecosystems have faced consecutive years of climate-related stress, and the high-elevation lakes and streams the frogs depend on are not immune. Maintaining enough suitable, stable habitat is a challenge that sits beyond the boundaries of any single breeding programme.
Despite those pressures, the cumulative record is concrete: over 10,000 mountain yellow-legged frogs and tadpoles reintroduced to high-elevation habitats across the region since the programme took shape. The work at Bluff Lake this year, returning a species absent from those waters for more than 70 years, is the latest chapter in that count, not the final one.
