A classic full-bodied red, Lalande de Pomerol is a blend of the Merlot and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. Family-owned Chateau Béchereau ferment half of the wine in stainless steel before aging in oak barrels with the other half fermented in oak. The result, a classic claret with a good balance of black fruits, toasty notes and sweet spice. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, Château Gachon’s Montagne-Saint-Émilion is a classic French red with a deep ruby colour and soft nose of cherry, cassis and spice from oak aging. Well-balanced on the palate with a solid tannic structure it has a complimentary soft mid-palate of ripe fruits including plums and red berries.

French Burgundy Wine Gift Set, £45

Nuiton-Beaunoy Bourgogne Chardonnay 2019 (75cl, ABV 13%) is a Burgundian white wine made using 100% Chardonnay grapes. Bright yellow in appearance, on the nose there are characters of apples, pears and a touch of stone fruit with gentle floral hints. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, with no oak, this delightful pour has been given time on its lees, helping to give the wine texture which is balanced by its acidity. From the same winery, Nuiton-Beaunoy Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2019 (75cl, ABV 12.5%) comprises solely of Pinot Noir grapes. A Pinot Noir with personality, it’s deep purple in appearance with a perfumed bouquet of small red fruits such as cherry and redcurrant, undercut with cedarwood spice. It’s lively, generous, appealing and crunchy in the mouth.

Rioja Gift Set, £39
Two superb bottles of Spanish Rioja from Hacienda el Ternero, are showcased in Wickhams’ Rioja Gift Set. Hacienda el Ternero has produced wine on their site dating back to 1077 and their Crianza `Torno`Rioja 2016 (75cl, 13.5%) is a classic, dry, medium-bodied, fruity red Rioja, made using 100% Tempranillo grapes. Classified as Crianza, it is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels before resting in bottle. On the nose it is perfumed with violets and cherries. The palate is fresh and structured with notes of black fruits with spices and hints of caramel from the oak influence on the finish. Its name `Torno` stems from the old Monastery; the monks would place food and clothing onto the base of a rotating door which they would turn `torno` so that the people outside could get to them without looking out. From the same winery, Hacienda el Ternero’s Selección Crianza 2014 has spent longer in the barrel, 14 months, and at least a year resting in bottle. Made from Tempranillo grapes, the Rioja exudes black cherry and plums on the nose with aromatic scents of violets and fresh herbs. On the palate expect that same vibrant fruit but with subtle balsamic, tapenade and fresh toast undertones from the French barrels.
