Sam Whitfield spent a decade in NGO communications before switching to journalism. He worked at development charities and social enterprises, running press, content, and campaigns for organisations that had more impact than budget. He started filing copy because he got tired of pitching stories to journalists who did not understand the sector. He writes about social enterprise, charity, public services, and the general news that affects communities rather than markets. He covers institutions without cynicism and failures without surprise. Sam lives in Norwich. He reads the Charity Commission register the way some people browse property listings, and finds it equally addictive.
