Producers provide creative feedback on various drafts of a script, but also keep track of how many night shoots a project will need and estimate the cost of special effects and big set pieces.
As the script develops, producers turn their attention to assembling the cast and crew. Certain positions and roles may come together during or even before the writing process, but producers play a key role in filling out the available positions, which may include arranging and overseeing actor auditions. When it comes to completing a film project, scheduling is extremely important, and it is impossible to start shooting if important positions remain unfilled.
After reviewing the script and storyboards, producers need to begin scouting for film locations. Different locations have unique availability constraints and legal standards, so producers need to start scouting as soon as possible. Producers may outsource this job to experienced film scouts, or actively search for and evaluate potential shooting locations themselves, sometimes alongside the director.
Other important aspects of film production include establishing and adhering to a budget and handling permitting and insurance matters. Once filming begins, producers oversee all daily operations, with the goal of ensuring a smooth, efficient shoot that produces a movie on time and on budget. Many production responsibilities continue throughout the post-production process, up until the moment of a film’s release.
