Student Makers STEM volunteers reach three continents from a California nonprofit

Student Makers STEM volunteers, nearly all of them teenagers, are now running free workshops in 3D printing, Python, data science, physics, financial literacy, and Arduino programming across the United States, Kenya, and India, with three schools near Mexico City next in line.

The organisation was founded in California in 2019 and received its 501(c)(3) status in 2026. What makes its operating model unusual is that the instructors are former participants: students who completed the programme a semester or two earlier return to teach the next cohort. That peer-to-peer structure is how a teen-run nonprofit sustains active international partnerships without professional staff.

How Student Makers STEM volunteers built a presence in Kenya

The origin story begins in 2022, when a group of high schoolers designed 150 LEGO-inspired aeroplane kits, 3D-printed them individually, assembled them by hand, and shipped them to Kenya Relief Academy in Migori. The school serves around 800 students from first through ninth grade, between 170 and 190 of them orphaned, and is the top-ranked primary school among more than 800 in its region.

Since that first shipment, Student Makers has donated a 3D printer, an Arduino kit, and more than 400 slides of curriculum to the school. Volunteers have logged 60 hours of live teacher training and worked directly with more than 30 students. One team of four built an autonomous agriculture rover and placed third at the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair.

One of those students, a ninth-grader named Jacob, now leads the school’s robotics team. His stated aim is to become a rocket engineer at NASA. Ruth Agongo, a teacher at Kenya Relief Academy, described the impact plainly: ‘You are a game-changer. Whatever you have taught us, we are putting into action because the kids are really excited by the technology.’

That enthusiasm is real, but so is the context. Migori is a low-income region, and the school’s clinic serves students with limited access to medical supplies. One of Student Makers’ next planned projects is to help Kenya Relief Academy students use their donated 3D printer to manufacture medical-grade face shields for that on-site clinic, turning a teaching tool into a practical community resource.

The India programme and the US framework behind Student Makers STEM volunteers

Since 2023, Student Makers instructors have been running live 3D-printing classes by video call with students at Dr. R. V. Shah English Medium School in rural Gujarat, India, a school of more than 350 students. A 3D printer was donated to the school, and more than 25 secondary students have completed the programme so far.

Back in the United States, the workshops follow a four-stage framework: Learn, Make, Showcase, Serve. The Serve stage is the mechanism that keeps the model self-sustaining: graduates are trained to teach the next round, which means the organisation scales without relying on outside recruitment. Six rounds of 3D printing have reached more than 70 students. Three rounds of Python and data science have produced 12 projects and more than 1,200 lines of code.

Student Makers is part of the Youth Technology Corps Global Alliance, which has connected schools across eight countries since 1998. Dilan Mehta, the Georgia Tech student who founded the organisation’s Georgia Tech chapter, frames the mission directly: ‘Every child deserves access to quality STEM education, regardless of where they were born.’

The three schools near Mexico City represent the next expansion. If the Kenya and India programmes are any guide, the first delivery will probably involve something a group of teenagers built themselves.
