Three white storks have landed at Willington Wetlands in Derbyshire, marking the white stork return to Derbyshire for the first time in roughly 600 years, as part of a project to establish a wild breeding population in the English Midlands. Inside Ecology confirmed the arrival of the three birds at the site managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.
The last recorded nesting of a white stork in Derbyshire dates to an era when Henry VI was at war with France and an independent Venice was fighting Serbia. The species has not bred in the region since. That gap is now what the translocation project is designed to close, though the work is only beginning.
The White Stork Return to Derbyshire: How the Project Works
The three birds will not simply be released into the open. They will first spend an acclimation period inside a predator-proof enclosure at Willington Wetlands, giving them time to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings before any wider release. The enclosure was designed by Celtic Rewilding, a charity that runs a similar programme in nearby Staffordshire, where the storks were sourced.
The logic behind the site choice is grounded in recent field data. According to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, wild storks were recorded flying over Willington Wetlands in 2024 and in the surrounding area in 2025, but none stayed to settle. The hope is that the presence of the newly arrived resident birds will act as a draw for those passing wild individuals, encouraging them to remain and eventually breed.
£300,000 from Veolia Environmental Trust funded the translocation. Willington Wetlands sits on the River Trent, which was chosen partly because of those recent wild sightings and partly because its wetland habitats and former gravel pits offer the conditions the species needs.
‘This project offers a rare opportunity to facilitate the return of a key missing species,’ said Harvey Tweats, Director of Celtic Rewilding. ‘The Trent Valley is uniquely placed to support white stork recovery in the Midlands, combining extensive wetland habitats with restoration opportunities in former gravel pits. Historical evidence, including archaeological finds and place names around the Humber, also points to the species’ former presence.’
A River Already Familiar With Long-Absent Species
The storks are not the first long-lost animal to return to this stretch of water. Beavers were reintroduced to the same River Trent corridor after an absence of around 800 years, going back to the era of Magna Carta. The storks’ 600-year gap is shorter only by comparison; both returns represent serious rewilding milestones for the Midlands.
Katie Last, Living Landscape Officer at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, framed the stork project in terms of what it could mean beyond the birds themselves. ‘From this nature-rich enclosure to the possibility of a future wild population, every step will help strengthen wetland habitats, enhance biodiversity, and inspire people of all ages to reconnect with nature on their doorstep,’ she said.
That ambition is real, but so are the uncertainties. Three birds arriving in an enclosure is a start, not a colony. Wild storks have passed through the area twice in recent years without stopping. Whether the resident birds will be enough to change that pattern is something only the next breeding season can answer.
What the project has already done is demonstrate that the habitat is in place. The combination of the River Trent’s wetlands, the restored gravel pits nearby, and the beaver reintroduction upstream has created conditions that make a self-sustaining stork population at least plausible. The white stork return to Derbyshire now depends on the birds themselves deciding to stay. The next test comes when wild migrants pass through in the seasons ahead, and the enclosure birds are visible on the ground beneath them.
