Kimberly-Clark‘s hesperaloe paper fibre research, the product of 20 years and $250 million in field and laboratory work, is moving from promising experiment to industrial-scale test: the company is investing more than $100 million to build a pilot facility in Yuma, Arizona, dedicated to cultivating and pulping the desert plant. The facility is expected to begin operations in 2027, according to IEN.
What hesperaloe is, and why Kimberly-Clark wants it
Hesperaloe is a long-leaved succulent that grows in arid environments. The company produces brands including Scott paper towels, Huggies diapers, and Cottonelle toilet paper, all of which currently rely on wood fibre from trees. For two decades, its teams have been searching for a plant that could replace that wood fibre entirely, with the goal of removing logging from its supply chains.
Craig Slavtcheff, the company’s top research-and-development officer, described the discovery to the Wall Street Journal as a ‘Goldilocks discovery’ and, separately, as a ‘moonshot.’ He was also candid about where things stand: commercial-scale testing is still underway, and the team has so far produced no estimate of what a full crop-to-pulp supply chain would cost. Early tests, he said, suggest hesperaloe pulp could be competitive with wood on price.
The plant itself was found on an abandoned state test crop facility in Arizona. Jeff Melucci, Kimberly-Clark’s top executive for strategy, told the Journal that his team worked through a long list before landing on it. ‘We tried to pulp everything from wood straw to bamboo,’ he said, noting that hesperaloe was the one that caught their attention out of 70 different substances tested. Hemp and bamboo were among the better-known candidates assessed along the way.
The hesperaloe paper fibre case for forests and arid land
The potential knock-on effects of a successful switch are broad. Reduced demand for logging would lower pressure on forests in major timber-producing countries. Fewer acres logged could mean additional CO2 remaining sequestered in standing trees. And because hesperaloe is a succulent suited to dry conditions, large-scale cultivation would consume less water than conventional fibre crops, a consideration that grows more pressing as temperatures rise.
There is also the question of what such a crop could do for arid land itself. Cultivating hesperaloe at scale could provide an economic incentive to manage land that might otherwise be subject to desertification. None of this is guaranteed: the challenges of replacing an entrenched industrial feedstock like wood are real and have tripped up many alternative-fibre ventures before.
The core difficulty is not just growing the plant, but building the supply chain infrastructure to deliver it at the cost and scale that wood currently achieves. Wood-based paper production has accumulated decades of efficiency improvements, distributed market knowledge, and incremental engineering gains. Hesperaloe has none of that history yet, which means the Yuma facility is not just a test of the plant, but a test of whether that gap can be closed.
What the Yuma facility will actually do
According to CivMetrics, the Yuma site will cover 50,000 square feet and is projected to create 50 jobs in the area. The investment of more than $100 million makes it a substantial commitment for a product that has not yet demonstrated commercial viability at scale, and for a company that has already spent a quarter of a billion dollars getting to this point.
For Melucci and Slavtcheff, the facility is the immediate next step: results from Yuma will determine whether hesperaloe can move from a compelling laboratory finding to a genuine alternative in Kimberly-Clark’s manufacturing base. Operations are expected to begin in 2027, giving the company a defined window in which to turn two decades of research into a supply chain that works without trees.
