An 11-year-old boy’s Charlie Orchard-Lisle beach find on 24 May has turned out to be a 1.8-million-year-old molar from an extinct elephant ancestor, confirmed by a researcher at the Natural History Museum in London. Charlie was walking with his mother Eleanor along East Lane beach in Bawdsey, a Suffolk coastal village 75 miles from London, when he spotted a rock-like object at the shoreline.
The tooth measures four inches in width and was identified as the upper left molar of an Anancus arvernensis, a species that roamed the Earth from the Late Miocene era to the Early Pleistocene, roughly 8.5 to 2 million years ago. According to the New York Post, the specific tooth dates to approximately 1.8 million years old, placing it near the end of that species’ existence on Earth.

The discovery came during an ordinary morning walk. Eleanor told SWNS that just ten minutes before they found the tooth, Charlie had been talking about how much he loves elephants. Then something caught both of their eyes in the lapping waves.
‘It must have been quite distinctive because it caught both our eyes, so we picked it up,’ Eleanor said. ‘We could tell it was something different. It had a different feel to it.’ She added: ‘It is quite incredible. I can’t believe you can find something so old on the beach.’
The object’s texture and appearance set it apart from ordinary beach stones, though neither Charlie nor his mother knew immediately what they had. An image of the tooth was shared with Professor Adrian Lister, a research leader in palaeontology at the Natural History Museum in London, who confirmed its origin and species.

Anancus arvernensis was a relative of the African bush elephant, weighing around six tonnes and reaching a shoulder height of roughly 8ft. Unlike the curved tusks of modern elephants, it carried straight tusks, a feature that led to its original misclassification in 1828 as a Mastodon. The species was only formally reclassified later.
Finding its remains on a Suffolk beach is less improbable than it sounds. Researchers believe the tooth was originally buried in the red crag cliff at Bawdsey and was flushed out over time by coastal erosion. The red crag formation along the Suffolk coast is well known for yielding Pliocene and Pleistocene-era fossils, and the constant action of the North Sea regularly exposes material that has been locked in the cliffs for millions of years. Bawdsey itself sits along a stretch of coastline where the cliffs are actively eroding, making accidental discoveries like Charlie’s an occasional, if rare, occurrence.
The tooth’s confirmation required expert input precisely because such finds can be easily overlooked or misidentified. Beach-worn bone and fossilised dental material can resemble ordinary flint nodules to the untrained eye, and many significant specimens are likely picked up and discarded each year without recognition. Charlie’s instinct to hold on to the object and seek out an identification proved to be the difference.
Professor Lister’s involvement gave the discovery its formal status. As a research leader in palaeontology at the Natural History Museum, his confirmation carries the weight needed to classify a find of this age and rarity. The tooth now stands as physical evidence of a time when creatures of this scale crossed the landscape that would become eastern England.
For Charlie, the timing carried its own strange quality. His mother recalled that he had been talking about elephants just minutes before they both looked down at the same moment and saw the molar of one sitting in the shallows, 1.8 million years after the animal that carried it last walked the Earth.
